This is substantive analysis of the manuscript as a whole to help develop the content and overall structure. It can include: 

• making suggestions regarding what may be missing or what can be cut

• flagging any major problems 

• recommendations for substantive revisions, reorganization

• assistance in writing/rewriting material

Stylistic/Line Editing

This is a close reading, line-by-line edit to examine and improve content, flow, and clarity. It includes: 

• revising sentence structure, paragraph organization

• adjusting word usage

• eliminating jargon and clichés

• improving style and adjusting tone as appropriate for the intended audience

Copyediting/Proofreading

This is an edit done towards the final version of a manuscript, in order to correct any typos, inconsistencies, and errors in spelling or grammar. It may also include:

• ensuring adherence to stylistic requirements for citations or content organization

• formatting headings and image inserts

• editing indexes

• checking page numbers, indexes, etc.
